5 Ways to Ignite Your Employees’ Passions.Transportfolio

As C.H. Robinson employees, we’re proud of what we do in our roles as general manager of the Fort Worth office and as director, global forwarding admin, out of Grapevine, TX. But another area of life we’re passionate about is raising money to fight cancer.

We’re both cancer survivors, and members of our families have also fought the courageous fight. Although tough, our experiences fueled our drive to contribute to a cancer-free future. That’s the short story behind the MJ Event—MO is the “M” and Jim is the “J”—a fundraiser that started as a golf tournament and is now a weekend-long event. Since 2001, with 16 annual MJ Events held, we’ve raised and donated over $6 million to cancer research funds. We never imagined the impact we could make, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our family, friends, colleagues, communities, and the tremendous support from our employer, C.H. Robinson.

We’re proud to work for an organization that cares so deeply about helping its employees give back to communities around the world. That kind of support goes a long way: contributions help out great causes, and we feel empowered to make a positive impact, professionally and personally. It also shows us that our philanthropic interests are important, and it helps us be more engaged and productive in our day-to-day work. It connects us to our communities, builds teamwork, improves our leadership skills, and boosts overall morale and wellness.

If you’re looking for ways to engage your employees in giving back to the community, keep these best practices in mind:

  1. Assess the needs and the interest of your team. Define exactly what you want to accomplish. Because we were both personally affected by cancer, we focused our efforts on raising money to fight the disease.
  2. Select a charity partner. Is anyone in your office currently volunteering with a nonprofit? Does a cause personally impact one of your employees? What causes are important in your local community? We paired up with Leukemia Texas, a top rated non-profit organization that is dedicated to fighting the life-threatening blood cancer of leukemia through the funding of leukemia research and patient aid.
  3. Identify potential activities or projects. What kind of project will provide the most impact and participation? Do you want to fundraise for the organization, volunteer with the organization, or support them through a sponsorship? Our fundraiser has evolved over the years, growing from a small golf tournament to a family-friendly weekend of events: it starts with a kickoff bash, auction, and live music at the Texas Motor Speedway and continues with a two-day golf tournament. We’ve also partnered up with Party Run, so the weekend also includes a 5K, 10K, and half marathon that Brad Wilson, general manager of the C.H. Robinson office in Dallas, oversees. We found a way to involve people of all ages, with all kinds of interests, to make the biggest impact.
  4. Communicate. Frequent communication is essential for a successful relationship. Share your results through stories, photos, and videos. You never know—a Facebook post on your company page could lead to more involvement and bigger results!
  5. Thank your volunteers. Recognize all the hard work your team has done to make your community a better place to live, work, and play. Our friends, families, colleagues, and community members have been instrumental to the MJ Event, and we wouldn’t be here if not for them. We’re thankful and humbled by their dedication and support.
